Due to the historical relations between the two countries, immigration to the UK from the region which is now Pakistan began in small numbers in the mid-nineteenth century. During the mid-nineteenth century, parts of what is now Pakistan came under the British Raj and people from those regions served as soldiers in the British Indian Army, and some were deployed in other parts of the British Empire. However it was following the Second World War, the break-up of the British Empire and the independence of Pakistan, that Pakistani immigration to the United Kingdom increased, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. This was made easier as Pakistan was a member of the Commonwealth. Pakistani immigrants helped to resolve labour shortages in the British steel and textile industries. Doctors from Pakistan were recruited by the National Health Service in the 1960s.



The Pakistani newspaper the Daily Jang has the largest circulation of any daily Urdu-language newspaper in the world. It is sold at several Pakistani newsagents and grocery stores across the UK. Urdu newspapers, books and other periodical publications are available in libraries which have a dedicated Asian languages service. Examples of British-based newspapers written in English include the Asian News (published by Trinity Mirror) and the Eastern Eye. These are free weekly newspapers aimed at all British Asians. British Pakistanis involved in print media include Sarfraz Manzoor, who is a regular columnist for The Guardian, one of the largest and most popular newspaper groups in the UK. Minority ethnic groups have historically been more likely to experience unemployment than the white majority. According to the ‘Social Policy in a Cold Climate’ (SPCC) research programme, between 2007/8 and 2012/13, the proportion of those who were of working age and unemployed from BAME communities increased at a faster rate than white majority communities. In London, the unemployment rate for white majority communities increased by 1.8 per cent; by 5.2 per cent for Pakistani communities, 5.1 per cent for ‘mixed-multiple’ ethnic groups, and 3.0 per cent for Black/African/Caribbean communities.

A key question faced by international NGOs is whether a gratuity, severance or any end-of-service or provident fund applies to them, as they are non-commercial undertakings/establishments. In this regard, one recent law allows a gratuity to be claimed by NGO employees working in the KPK region (see the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Industrial And Commercial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 2013) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shops and Establishments Act, 2015. There is a grey area here with regard to the application of such an act to the rest of Pakistan as, while international NGOs consider it best practice to provide such benefits, the majority of the local NGOs here are not paying such benefits. From a legal perspective, and in any case, an employer is bound to offer only one retirement benefit out of pensions, gratuities and provident funding. The logic often provided is that NGOs should focus their limited funding on poor and deserving people, rather than offering such benefits to employees. Also, many local labour studies in Pakistan have shown that severance pay (particularly where multinationals or NGOs are involved) tends to tempt employees to abuse the benefit, as they are aware of the large amounts of money they will be getting when the contract is ended.

In 2001, around 3,500 British Pakistanis were in the highest ranking business and professional occupations, compared to 1,000 Bangladeshis and 10,000 Indians. Keeping in mind the lower class resources of Mirpuris, the rates of entry of non-Mirpuri Pakistanis into managerial or professional occupations turns out to be similar to that of British Indians. In 2015, 23 per cent of Pakistani secondary school students were eligible for free school meals, compared to 14 per cent of White British pupils. Amongst pupils in Key Stage 1, 17 per cent of Pakistani children were eligible for FSM compared to the White British average of 16 per cent.

Your employer is responsible to provide this contract at the time of your appointment, transfer or promotion. Your appointment letter (employment contract) must state the nature of your employment (permanent or temporary, nature of duties i.e. job description, terms and conditions of service etc. What are different types of employment contract, as specified under the labor laws? If you are working in an establishment, you will be classified in one of the following six categories. Transferability of services - whether your services can be transferred to other sections/departments of your organization. This can be both good and bad depending on your experience. Transferability of your services will give you diversified experience however you may not be able to specialize in your desired field. Confidentiality agreement - Your employer may require you not to associate, directly or indirectly, with a similar business during the course of your employment with the organization and that you would not divulge any information relating to the organization to its competitors (even after termination of your employment) Leaves, retirement benefits, medical facilities - you must check whether these provisions are in accordance with labor laws or company policy.
